The Difference between BIM and Virtual Construction

Constructing a new building means having a plan - and these days, the plan is often created with the help of a computer. This involves two things - BIM and Virtual Construction.

BIM stands for Building Information Model. This refers to a model that is constructed with the aid of a computer, which represents the building. The term was popularized by Autodesk, although the term "building model" dates to the mid-1980s. It is sometimes used to refer to the entire process but, correctly, BIM refers to the model which has been generated. This model is designed to allow the extraction of 2D contract drawings and other views which are guaranteed to be consistent with each other. A BIM changes with the data input and exists in five dimensions, with the fourth dimension being time and the fifth being cost. BIM is also sometimes used to refer to analysis techniques used in the process of virtual design.

Virtual construction, which can be known as VDC - Virtual Design and Construction, is the process of using a BIM as part of the work process. You cannot have VDC without a BIM - it is a key component, but it is part of a computer aided construction process that is an improvement over traditional methods. The process is mostly paperless and uses one of a number of software tools to create the models and plan.

In other words, virtual construction is the process, BIM is a key tool used in the process - although you can, of course, create a BIM for purposes other than virtual construction, such as to analyze an existing building.
