Interstate 94, Calumet Bridge

Calumet City, Indiana

The Midwest Steel Team fabricated, shipped and erected the Interstate I 94 Two Truss steel bridge utilizing a unique process. The Midwest Steel ironworkers lashed 2 barges together, set up false work on the barges to carry the truss bridge, and, using two 4100 S 2 cranes (one on the shore and one on the barge) erected the bridge on the barge. Each crane had its own raising gang and they erected one half of the bridge in succession.

After the bridge took shape on the barge, the ironworkers secured the 420 foot long by 58 foot wide structure to the barge and floated it down the river with the help of two tug boats. They floated the bridge onto piers and then finished setting it. The ironworkers then cut the false-work loose and the barges floated down the river to their destination. The final placement took a total of twelve hours. The crews performed the entire project with zero safety incidents.
