General Motors Vehicle Engineering Center
Size: 9 stories – 10,000 Tons
Duration: 11 Months
Warren, Michigan

The General Motors Vehicle Engineering Center is a stately nine story building addition (1 Million square feet), to the historical Eero Saarinen designed campus in Warren, Michigan. The unique building brings the different engineering groups that design and manufacture General Motors vehicles across the globe together to dream, experiment and create excellence. A new two-story lobby connection between the buildings was also constructed along with interior car exhibit space for both public and GM employee showcasing. The unique facility incorporates electronic tools for design, collaboration and conferencing, and support organization functions including purchasing, product analysis, design and validation support, and facilities operations.

The consolidation of vehicle engineers into one location means that General Motors can accelerate its production time and take ideas for future North American products from design to prototype without leaving the 680-acre Warren campus in record time.

Recycling of materials was an important element in the construction process. Over 1,100 cubic yards of concrete slab from the demolished prototype build shop was crushed and used in the foundation of the new tower. Over 3.1 million pounds of recycled steel from scrapped automobiles was used for structural steel beams, columns, joists, girders, studs and metal deck.

Midwest Steel submitted “look ahead” schedules on a weekly basis to accommodate the changes and scheduled the steel deliveries in close sequence to assist in mitigating the schedule delays. The glass and steel building “on the lake” is a beautiful addition to the historical Saarinen complex and consolidates and enhances the efforts of the General Motors Engineering Groups from around the world.
