Midwest Steel utilized our unique project delivery system - - Structural Steel Design Assist - - an integrated team approach to fabricating and erecting this new paint shop in Lansing, Michigan for General Motors Corporation. The Midwest Team worked side-by- side with Durr Industries and brought many cost and schedule saving ideas to the project early on. We worked with Durr, the paint system manufacturer, to incorporate the installation of the Paint System Equipment- - paint ovens, tanks, and booths - - into the erection phase of the 800,000 square foot building (5,000 tons of steel) on the first pass. This unique approach returned substantial cost and schedule savings to General Motors.
The Midwest Team also incorporated the process equipment support steel into the overall steel fabrication and erection schedules, and we were responsible for the coordination and management of two fabrication shops. We scheduled steel deliveries JIT (just-in-time) to the site to eliminate double handling of the steel. Midwest Steel incorporated over 150 changes throughout the project by utilizing our internal Change Management System with no delay in the schedule. This paint shop was one of three that we delivered to General Motors under this highly successful project delivery approach.
