Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum

Duration: 13 Months
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Because of Midwest Steel’s reputation as an expert in structural steel erection, the Engineer of Record on this project called on Midwest Steel to assist in the erection of this extremely complicated structure. From the beginning of our contract there were huge challenges that had to be met. First, the fabrication of the steel (by others) took place in Mexico and had to be shipped to Puerto Rico by freighter, offloaded and delivered to the site. This process was managed by the Project’s General Contractor, was out of sequence, and lacked the detailed planning that was needed, especially in light of limited space on the site.

The complicated framing of the entire structure as well as the intricate structural design of the stadium entrance made almost the entire project a “Critical Lift” that required a very detailed, engineered erection procedure. There were difficult connections throughout the entire structural steel design. To add to the difficulties the duration of the project was during the Puerto Rico rainy season and the Midwest Steel Team faced several weeks of high winds and rain. In addition, the local labor force required extensive training for the erection procedures that Midwest Steel utilized, and the Midwest Management Team trained everyone to ensure that the erection procedure went smoothly. Even with all of these challenges, we completed the project very close to the original schedule, and the stadium opened for business…. Olay!!
