Midwest Steel of Detroit Michigan announced today that they have been awarded an important structural steel contract to modify NASA’s Mobile Launcher for the new Space Launch System at Kennedy Space Center.
Midwest Steel is delighted to have been selected for the structural steel portion of the project by the Prime Contractor, J.P. Donovan Construction of Rockledge, FL. This project will begin immediately and is targeted for completion in 18 months.
This project has the purpose of modifying the existing mobile launcher base from a 24’x24’ space to a much larger 32’ x 65’ space. This increase in size will allow the mobile launcher to accommodate NASA’s new Space Launch System and a variety of other launch vehicles.
The NASA Space Launch System will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond Earth orbit. It also will back up commercial and international partner transportation services to the International Space Station. Designed to be flexible for crew or cargo missions, the SLS will be safe, affordable, and sustainable, to continue America's journey of discovery from the unique vantage point of space.
