Midwest Steel Focuses on Safety in Professional Development Seminar

Roundtable and panel discussions, guest speakers, implementation workshops, and more featured in the two-day professional development seminar.

Midwest Steel rounded out November with our annual professional development seminar highlighting safety, innovation, and productivity.

Steel Professional Development SeminarThe seminar, titled “Building Our Vision Into Reality,” included Midwest Steel’s leadership, estimating, operations, and tool and equipment teams, field superintendents and many enterprising apprentices.

“We also include our team from Petersburg, IN, Orlando and the fabrication team from Indiana Bridge,” said Tom Broad, Midwest Steel Executive Vice President. “We have roundtable discussions, panel discussions, and we speak on the current status of the company and what is most important going forward.”

During the two-day seminar emphasizing safety, the Midwest Steel corporate safety director shared statistics from the past year, incidents, and corrective actions.

“There is always someone that speaks about safety, and we have subject matter experts come in,” Broad said. “This helps build a proactive and focused safety culture, improves planning processes, and helps us establish the difference between ‘average’ and ‘best of class.’”

Successful superintendents were recognized for their safety performance, receiving awards of plaques and jackets for the number of zero incident hours they oversee on their projects. This year, Midwest Steel also added awards for innovation as well as customer service accolades.

Along with awards ceremonies recognizing excellence in their industry, the event provided a platform for discussion on time management, customer service, innovation, and achieving operational excellence.

“This workshop laid out the levels of project planning that lead to productivity and identified the signs of a reactive culture,” Broad said. “This also demonstrated the power of planning and explained the different roles in effective project planning in the construction industry.

Midwest Steel kicked off the productive event with an opening reception for relationship building and interaction.

“This is the only time during the year we can all come together due to the location of our projects,” Broad said. “Midwest Steel is an industry leader in safety, innovation and quality because that is our ongoing focus at every level of this organization. This annual event is just a portion of our overall commitment to perpetuating the values that drive our success.”
